International Youth Justice Convention 2012 – Fifth Biennial Conference of the International Juvenile Justice Observatory

The International Juvenile Justice Observatory is pleased to announce the 5th Biennial Conference, which will be held in London at Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel on Tuesday 6 to Wednesday 7 November 2012.

The convention will bring together over 500 people from more than 50 countries to discuss the impact of economic global crises on youth justice. Keynote speakers will include:

  • Dr. Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence against Children – Portugal.
  • Prof. John Pitts, University of Bedfordshire, United Kingdom.
  • Nils Muižnieks, Commissioner for Human Rights – United States.
  • Prof. Dr. John Hagedorn, University of Illinois, Chicago – United States.
  • Chuka Umunna MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills – United Kingdom.
  • John Drew, The Youth Justice Board in England and Wales – Kingdom.
  • Prof. Jaap E. Doek , Former member UN Committee on Rights of the Child. Netherlands.

The conference’s Scientific Committee will be chaired by:

  • Prof. John Pitts, University of Bedfordshire, United Kingdom.
  • Prof. Dr Frieder Duenkel, University of Greifswald, Germany.

Through keynote presentations, workshops, panel sessions and an extensive exhibition, the agenda will explore the themes of:

  • Policy development for socially excluded children and young people in trouble; diversion and inclusion strategies.
  • Economic interventions, cost avoidance and value for money services.
  • Community and multi-agency interventions; social inclusion, crime reduction, alternatives to custody and custodial/decarceration programmes.
  • Effective practice; direct/individual work with children, parents and families.

The Conference conclusions and recommendations will be presented to international institutions with which the IJJO holds formal status, such as the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations of the United Nations (ECOSOC), UNESCO, the Council of Europe, the European Commission through its Child Rights forum, the Fundamental Rights Agency and the European Economic and Social Committee.
